This session is to bring to light our experience of when different disciplines have a small part in an overall safety system but do not have an overarching control philosophy. This has lead to very high counts of alarm to Control Center Operators causing Alarm overload and Normalization of Alarms.

Graduated from Fairview Collage as a small engine mechanic in 1996.
Grant PrideCo late 97-99 manufacturing drill stem. This was my first introduction to Instrumentation when we had our Inertia Welder outfitted to comply with ISO 9000. This is when I thought I could do this better.
Graduated from NAIT's Instrumentation Engineering Technologist program in 2001. Currently accredited Certified Engineering Technologist CET.
From there work in various positions including field tech, gas over oil actuator manufacturing, inside sales and design 2001-2003.
Started working for Enbridge Inc in Feb of 2003. My roll within the company has varied from the early days of Technical Applications, to small project management, field operations, major project support, liquid pipelines support to present day Instrumentation Specialist. In my current primary roll is supporting our Field Staff and Controls Center when issues arise. My secondary roll is to innovate and challenge how we currently do business to provide the stable and accurate control and measurement from our instrumentation. Lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a combination of four Design Standards, Engineered Equipment Specification and Field Construction Specification, supporting another five specifications.
Dad of two kids. Actively still playing men's competitive volleyball and managing my own team for over 20 years.
Laura Chen
Senior Instrumentation Engineer, Enbridge
Laura Chen is a senior Engineer with Enbridge with extensive industry experiences both in operating company and engineering consulting firms. Her working areas including oil & gas, fertilizer and petro-chemical. Laura’s interest is always in process safety improvement, system operation effectiveness & reliability enhancement.
As a senior instrumentation engineer with Enbridge since 2012, Laura is a Lead instrumentation SME (Subject Matter Expert), develops and maintains many company design standards, and equipment specifications in Fire & Gas, Level, Pressure and Temperature instrumentation areas.
She serves as the focal point for regional instrumentation service activities with operations and projects, participates and leads Root Cause Analysis on unscheduled line shutdowns, incidents investigations and provides the solutions to prevent future re-occurrence.
She provides specialized knowledge, insight and guidance for liquid hydrocarbon pipelines and related facility assets, ensuring all safety, quality, reliability and operational expectations are met.
Her most recent achievement is leading an Enbridge pilot project in reducing tank false fire alarms, effectively reduced 98% of the flood of false fire alarms, huge improvement in process safety, system integrity and reliability.
